Derrick Rose Getting Healthy

Derrick Rose found himself in an unfamiliar position during overtime against the Heat on Thursday night…on the bench.  Rose, who admittedly was struggling through an ankle injury, was benched in favor of backup Point Guard CJ Watson.  Watson hit a clutch 3-pointer to send the game to overtime and was an astounding +38 while he was on the floor.

After significant time off because of injuries, the rust showed for Rose.  He struggled shooting the ball going 1 for 13.  How concerned should the Bulls and Derrick Rose fans be?  Not very.  After that much time away it was expected that Rose would need to work himself back into a rhythm offensively. Furthermore, an athletic team defensively like the Heat were a tough challenge to come back to.  Expect Derrick to look more in rhythm when the Bulls take on the Pistons on Sunday.

The Bulls have 7 games left on the season and it will be interesting to see how they manage Derrick Rose and Rip Hamilton.  Both players have missed large portions of the season due to injury and just now seem to be hitting a healthy stride.  Ideally, the Bulls would head into the playoffs with both players staying healthy while finding their groove with the team.  If the Bulls can hit the playoffs in stride they could be favorites to come out of the East.

Which Derrick Rose Buzzer-Beater is Your Favorite?

Derrick Rose possesses the clutch gene.  While some might shy away from the pressure of taking the final shot, Rose embraces it.  He embraced that moment again on Wednesday night as he hit a buzzer-beater to beat the Bucks, 106-104.

In a game that started with Milwaukee fans chanting “overrated” at him in the first quarter, Rose got the last laugh.  Rose scored 30 points including the final two.  Rose has hit a couple of clutch baskets in the 4th quarter, which of the ones below is your favorite?

Derrick Rose Shines in Limited All-Star Minutes

Derrick Rose represented the Chicago Bulls as an All-Star starter for the 2nd straight season.  Rose and the East squad fell to the Kevin Durant led West squad, 152-149.  Rose played well in limited minutes, scoring 14 points in his 18 minutes.  Rose shot well from the field, making 6 of his 8 field goal attempts.  Luol Deng, the Bulls other All-Star, played only 5 minutes.  Deng fell on his injured wrist and Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, who coached the East squad, held him out.

Thibodeau intentionally limited his players minutes, both of whom have been struggling with injuries.  Despite Rose and Deng struggling with injuries, the Bulls have the 3rd best record in the NBA (27-8).  The Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder are the only teams with a better record, they are both 27-7.

After winning the MVP last year, Rose has played well in the 1st half of the 2011-2012 season.  Rose is averaging 20.9 points per game, 7.7 assists per game, and is shooting 46% on the year.  If healthy, expect Rose to improve upon those numbers in the 2nd half of the season.  The Bulls season resumes again Tuesday when they host the New Orleans Hornets.

Derrick Rose Leads Bulls to 6-1 Start

Derrick Rose is off to an MVP-caliber startDerrick Rose has led the Chicago Bulls to a fast start in the condensed 66-game 2011-2012 NBA season.  After a loss to Golden State, Rose and the Bulls have ripped off 5 straight wins.  The Bulls 6-1 record currently ties them with the Miami Heat, the 2011 Easter Conference Champions.  What makes the Bulls record even more impressive is the fact that their first 4 games were played across the country in California.  Here are some brief breakdowns of the Bulls last 5 wins and things that stood out from each game:

Chicago Bulls 108 | Sacramento Kings 98

In their first game after losing to Golden State, the Bulls were challenged by a young Sacramento Kings team.  Derrick Rose got into foul trouble (5) and was limited to 32 minutes as a result.  The Bench Mob played their part as CJ Watson stepped up with 9 assists and Ronnie Brewer had 12 points.  Despite limited time on the floor, Rose still finished with 19 points and 8 assists.

Chicago Bulls 114 | Los Angeles Clippers 101

Derrick Rose matched up with Chris Paul the Los Angeles Clipper for the first time in his career and arguably played his best game ever as a pro.  Derrick was aggressive from start to finish and his numbers showed.  He continued to get teammates involved, finishing the game with 16 assists.  As if that wasn’t enough, Rose also had 29 points and 8 rebounds.

Chicago Bulls 104 | Memphis Grizzlies 64

Derrick Rose and the Bulls kicked off 2012 with a blowout against the Memphis Grizzlies.  Rose had a modest stat line of 16 points and 6 assists, but he played only 25 minutes in the game.  The White Mamba, Brian Scalabrine, came in late in the game but failed to score.

Chicago Bulls 76 | Atlanta Hawks 74

It wasn’t a pretty win, but Derrick Rose scored 17 points in the 4th quarter for another close win on the season.  The Bulls had only 42 points through 3 quarters and trailed the Hawks by 14 going into the final quarter of play.  And something clicked as if it were a different team out on the floor.  Rose made a variety of key plays throughout the 4th and finished with 30 points to go along with 7 assists.

Chicago Bulls 99 | Detroit Pistons 83

Rose finished with 17 points and 10 assists in the Bulls 16-point victory over the struggling Pistons.  Carlos Boozer chipped in 19 points on 9-15 shooting.  After sitting for much of the Hawks game, Joakim Noah rebounded and played a solid game.  Noah finished with the highest +/- on the team with a +18.

Derrick Rose and the Bulls continue their pursuit of an NBA title and another MVP award on Friday against Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic.
